Why ‘Shoesontheroof’? It stemmed from when we lived downtown in Shanghai. We were privileged to live in a renovated 1920’s house but around us were all sorts of other accommodation of differing quality. Right behind us was a small house with rooms shared between one or more families. During the day you could see into the room facing us and see a sheet dividing the room in two. Obviously space was at a premium and at night the family would put their shoes neatly out on the roof……….somehow humbling and synonymous with the ever increasing gap between the haves and the have nots.
